About

Hi! I live in Japan and work with playful media & in the digital humanities. This blog is an attempt to do some archival work and engage in some long-form writing and storytelling as it relates to my life here – in particular, things that I don’t expect will get too much English-language coverage or recognition elsewhere. In terms of focus, I’m particularly fond of Japanese movies (my favorite directors are Juzo Itami, Masaaki Yuasa, and Hayao Miyazaki) and live theatre, anime/manga (especially more independent stuff), and public transportation & urban infrastructure. I have a Master’s in Linguistics, so I might talk about Japanese language-related stuff here too? We’ll see.

I also make subtitles for anime and scanlate manga, and have been translating Splatoon-related content since 2015.

My Twitter is @frozenpandaman. My main website, portfolio & other projects are all at elifessler.com. Feel free to contact me through either of those places – and, if you’ve enjoyed this blog, here’s my Ko-fi page if you want to leave a tip: https://ko-fi.com/eeeli

No mobile layout, sorry. Pretend it’s 2004.

The image at the top is a photo taken by me of a bridge in Nagoya that I like, crossing the Ueda River, near Shiogama-guchi.
